Sports Based Martial ArtsThese are martial arts systems in which practitioners train to compete in a contest governed by specific rules. Since there are a large number of sports based martial arts, each have their own rules and regulations and often competition within the same discipline can vary depending on the organization under whose sanction the event takes place.

Most sport based martial arts evolved from a traditional martial arts style, and often students begin their training in a traditional system before becoming involved in the sportitive side of that system.

The most common sport based martial arts are sport karate, sport judo, sport taekwondo, boxing, wrestling. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Muay Thai, Brazillian Ju-Jitsu and Wu Shu.
