By Frank Shyong – June 16, 2013, Los Angeles Times ~ Officials in Chinatown unveiled a 7-foot bronze statue of Bruce Lee to a crowd of several hundred in the historical Central Plaza on Saturday night.

The unveiling caps a five-year effort to bring the statue to Chinatown, said Shannon Lee, Bruce’s daughter and president of the Bruce Lee Foundation. The statue, created by an artist in Guangzhou, China, is the first such statue of her father in the United States, Shannon Lee said.

Though the statue will not be permanently installed until business leaders can raise $150,000 to install seating and a concrete plinth, the timing was right for the unveiling, Shannon Lee said. This year is the 40th anniversary of her father’s death, as well Chinatown’s 75th year of existence. And Saturday was the day before Father’s Day.

“Seeing it there in its permanent spot with the night sky of Chinatown … it really struck me,” Shannon Lee said.

Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco’s Chinatown, lived in Oakland and opened several martial arts schools in Seattle’s Chinatown. But he was a fixture in Los Angeles’ Chinatown in the 1960s, opening a school on West College Street and working out at the Alpine Recreation Center. Lee stood out, jogging energetically around a neighborhood where almost no one did, said Shannon Lee.

“It was the best place to be for Chinese food and to speak to people in his own language,” Shannon Lee said.

Actor James Hong used to manage a theater near Lee’s studio and recalled seeing him around the neighborhood. Hong, a prolific actor with more than 400 film and television credits to his name, including “Kung Fu Panda,” said he admired Lee’s patience and perseverance.

“I learned from him to keep a level head,” said Hong between taking pictures with his fans. “That’s why I’m still around after all these years.”

In Los Angeles, Lee took a role as Kato in a television adaptation of “The Green Hornet,” launching a short film career that influenced cinema and pop culture even beyond his death at 32 in 1973. His films inflamed the imagination of a generation of teenagers who grew up seeking black belts and plastering his posters on their bedroom walls.

John Kreng, 44, staked out a spot with his friends hours before the statue’s unveiling, trading Bruce Lee stories and reminiscing. Growing up half-Thai and half-Chinese in an all-white neighborhood in Maryland, Lee’s films were inspiring, Kreng said.

“Here’s this hero who looks like me on the screen,” Kreng said.

Kreng grew up at the end of the Vietnam War and “got beat up a lot,” he said. Then he saw “Way of the Dragon” in theaters and took up martial arts. Lee inspired him to become a stuntman and fight choreographer, Kreng said.

“Seeing him on the screen gave me hope,” said Kreng, who said he has watched “Enter the Dragon” at least 60 times. “I would not be here today if it wasn’t for Bruce Lee.”

Art Camacho, another fight choreographer and stuntman, was similarly inspired by Lee. He grew up in a rough neighborhood in East L.A., saw “The Chinese Connection” in 1972, and promptly took up martial arts classes.

“Bruce Lee changed my whole outlook,” said Camacho, who said he once hired one of Bruce Lee’s costars just to get his autograph on a movie poster.

When the crowds thinned after the unveiling, Kreng and Camacho took up a stance beneath the statue. They turned sideways, clenched a fist, and assumed expressions somewhere between grimaces and grins.

The moment captured, the two self-described Bruce Lee nerds laughed and exchanged high fives.

“I’m a hard- — when I do my stuff, but when I see Bruce Lee, I’m a little kid again,” Camacho said. “This is just awesome. I’m a 16-year-old sitting in that theater again.”

Alexander Fu was born Cheung Fu-Sheng on October 20, 1954. In the 1970′s Alexander Fu was a major Hong Kong movie star. He is a tragic hero in his own right because of his great popularity in Hong Kong and his very early death in an automobile accident.

As a child he was always in trouble and was often found fighting in the streets. His businessman father moved the family to Hawaii for a short time and while there Fu Sheng studied both judo and karate. When he was 17 he began to study at Shaw Brothers Southern Drama school and director Chang Cheh noticed him right away and had Alexander begin training with Lau Kar-leung for 6 months.

His film career began with the 1972 film, The Fourteen Amazons, as an extra. His first lead role was in Director Cheh’s Police Force. It wasn’t long before his charm and good looks made him a Shaw Brothers star in movies including Heroes Two, Five Shaolin Masters, Shaolin Temple and the Brave Archer series. Eventually Cheh would star Fu Sheng in 23 different films.

In 1978 and 1979 Fu Sheng suffered serious injuries which forced him to take time off to heal and halted his ability to perform much of his most serious stunt work. On the set of The Deadly Breaking Sword he was suspended 8 feet in the air when the wire that held him snapped and he fell 8 feet dropping on his head. He shattered bones in his right leg while filming Heroes Shed No Tears.

Fu Sheng was suppose to star in the Shaw film Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow but Run Run Shaw, head of the studio, refused him the part and eventually gave the part to Jackie Chan. This movie was one of Jackie Chan’s big hits.

Fu Sheng worked very hard to recover, and he was able to resume his martial arts film career, but he never regained the full extent of his previous abilities.

During the filming of Invincible Pole Fighter, in which he played the hero, Fu Sheng and his brother attended an engagement at the Clear Water Bay Golf Club and on the way home his brother crashed Andrew’s Porsche 911 Targa into a cement wall. Fu Sheng died in a hospital 3 hours later. He was only 28 years old. At the time of the accident, Fu Sheng was living in the late Bruce Lee’s house in Kowloon with his wife, Jenny Tseng. Andrew died almost 10 years after Bruce Lee and the day of their death was only couple of weeks apart. Fu Sheng’s funeral was organised by the Shaw Brothers committee and it was compared to the funeral of Bruce Lee, also very heavily attended. The Invincible Pole Fighter had to be rewritten in parts and Fu Sheng’s character disappears and co-star Gordon Liu’s character takes over the lead. To this day it is said that the his ghost haunts the backlot and a shrine was created in his old makeup cubicle to appease his ghost.

Fu Sheng’ film work is still revered in Hong Kong. He is not well known in the United States, however, because his films are not readily available there because he died so young. He does, however have a strong cult following among genre fans.

Executive Producer & CEO of MASBTV Danny Zaino from the USA and Graham Slater of KAPOW TV and Founder of Martial Arts Australia have joined forces to create one international martial arts programming network.

Martial Arts Show Biz TV includes television, radio and a magazine all dedicated to martial arts. MASBTV is headed by Danny Zaino, and the company has expanded its broadcasting range to Australia and the UK. They have also created a new channel called DANNY ZAINO KIM KAHANA TV which has expanded into action/sports channels and gives the company access to an extensive library of pay-per-view videos.

By partnering with Martial Arts Australia’s Media House, the two companies will now exchange TV shows and share audiences and presenters jointly, bringing a unique mix of action, education and entertainment.

Danny Zaino, Producer, says the partnership is great for a number of reasons. It will allow the two companies to reach larger audiences, give them access to more global stories, and they will have popular pay-per-view content which will be broadcasted to any device, on demand. Mr Zaino is also looking forward to going to Australia and producing a shows ‘downunder’ with those “crazy Australian guys”, not to mention throwing more shrimp on the barbie!

Graham Slater, the founder of Martial Arts Australia, was asked how this Channel launch and partnership will impact the industry. “Our sport has, sadly, been missing out on real TV exposure and recognition. Major TV networks have chosen other sports in preference to martial arts for decades. Now, we can not only showcase all styles of martial arts, but we can also help provide instructors with a passive income while they are not teaching. This will have a massive impact on our industry, because the sport can now reach more people and influence them to participate. One of the best things I see for teachers is they can easily sell their instructional videos around the globe syndicated to thousands of affiliate channels/stores. The same goes for event promoters who not only open up new revenue streams, but they get more exposure for their fighters, competitors and sponsors.”

Further, he says, “As we launch in the US we have already rolled out 850 affiliate TV sites in Australia with a further 2000 to go live by the end of June 2013. Our media platform partner Spondo has enabled us to gain access to 50,000+ hours of additional content for our existing video library. Combining all this and Danny Zaino’s content we have some very exciting news to share and viewers who will have plenty to watch when they look for their daily dose of crazy martial arts action.”

CZ12 is a 2012 Hong Kong-Chinese action film co-produced, written, directed by, and starring Jackie Chan. The film takes it origin from the films Armour of God (1987) and its sequel, Armour of God II: Operation Condor. The movie took Seven years to make and cost US$50 million (S$61.1 million) to shoot and to date has grossed over US $138,000,000 at the Chinese box-office.

CZ12 won Best Action Choreography at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Award, and Jackie Chan earned two Guinness World Records: “Most Stunts Performed by a Living Actor” and “Most Credits in One Movie” from his involvement in the film.

CZ12 is a spectacular new adventure and it takes Asian Hawk, better known as JC (Jackie Chan) from the chateaux and vineyards of France and the hidden dangers of a jungle on a South Seas island, to the terrors of a fight in free-fall above an active volcano. The story is a quest to track down six bronze sculptures, originally part of a set of twelve representing the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, which were looted from the Summer Palace in Beijing when the city was sacked by European armies in the 19th century. At the same time there’s an international campaign in progress to demand the return of stolen cultural treasures to their countries of origin. But Jackie plays a soldier of fortune, not a high-minded patriot. He’s in it for the money. But as events take unexpected turns and strange alliances take shape, motives begin to change …

Director: Jackie Chan
Writers: Frankie Chan, Jackie Chan, Edward Tang, Stanley Tong
Stars: Jackie Chan, Qi Shu, Xingtong Yao, Kwon Sang Woo

The Lost Medallion Synopsis

The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone is a feature movie which opened in theaters March 1, 2013. This faith-based, family, action/adventure film will thrill children and tweens, six through fourteen, their parents and grandparents. When Daniel Anderson (Alex Kendrick, Courageous, Fireproof and Facing the Giants) visits a foster home to drop off some donations he is quickly roped into telling the kids a story.

The story he tells is about Billy Stone and Allie, two teen-age-friends, who uncover a long- lost-medallion and then accidentally wish themselves back in time. Will the experience give them a new understanding of who they are and what their lives really mean? Daniel finishes his story to the foster children with the Truth about their tremendous value to God, who loves them and created them. The story not only changes the children, but is bound to change all who see the movie.

I bring this up because I think it explains why G.I. JOE (the film franchise) has so many explosions. If you saw the first film, G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA, it was an orgy of explosions. In the interim between blowing up my G.l. Joes and the launch of this film franchise, Hasbro completely revamped G.I. Joe to superhero proportions. The dolls were scaled down in size and accompanied with a long-running cartoon and comic book series. It was one of the most successful rebranding updates in franchise history. I didn’t really keep up with that. After I blew my G.I. Joes up, the new series just didn’t do much for me. However, the post-’80s G.I. Joe, the “Real American Hero” version, did add two elements that warmed my martial heart – femme fatales and ninjas.

RISE OF THE COBRA was a staggering success, grossing over $300 million worldwide. The lead Joe was Channing Tatum, top of the list for actor-who-should’a-got-his-butt-w hupped-by-Cung-Le, in the role of “Duke.” Duke bore G.I. Joe’s signature cheek scar, but he wasn’t the “Joe,” which was just as well as Tatum just didn’t have that grizzled veteran look of the original dolls. RISE OF THE COBRA was a bombastic fantasy action flick with an IRON MAN/CLONE WARS vibe, pure unadulterated mindless entertainment. This wasn’t a film to see great acting. It was a film based on a cartoon based on a plastic doll, so the level of acting was sufficient enough for that. After all, who needs to act around so many explosions? Nor is it a film to think about very hard. As action films go, G.I. JOE contains an incomprehensible level of collateral damage. The death toll of innocent bystanders is astronomical, but that’s never really addressed, as it is comic book fantasy. This is a film to see G.I. Joe, femme fatales, ninjas and lots of explosions.

The new film, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, is presented in glorious 3D. If the thought of watching ninja femme fatales fling shuriken at you from an explosion doesn’t bring a grin to your face, you should just skip this film and go see something else like THE QUARTET. You’ve got to like explosions, really like them, especially the digital kind where there is little carbon-footprint impact beyond the natural gas emitted by the cell of CGI programmers who logged scores of long production nights to deliver these explosions in all of their 3D glory. Unlike the Academy Award-winning 3D film LIFE OF PI, which only tosses some 3D flying fish at you, G.I. JOE blows up in your face, showering you with 3D shrapnel like popcorn in an uncovered pan.

For RETALIATION, many of RISE OF THE COBRA’s key players reprise their Joe roles, including Tatum, Byung-hun Lee, Jonathan Pryce and Ray Park. Pryce seethes with malice, which is good, as he’s the only villain who isn’t masked (actually he is masked according to the plot, but the mask is Pryce’s face, and with this film the plot only muddles the explosions). In contrast, one of the ninjas can’t keep his mask on. Lee is the white ninja Storm Shadow, a South Korean celebrity and Taekwondo practitioner. Storm Shadow not only unmasks, but takes off his shirt too, to show off his buff physique, which is great for the fangirls of G.I. JOE, and I’m sure there are a few, at least to fill out those female cosplay parts. Ray Park is the black ninja Snake Eyes. Park, a former wushu champion, is renowned for his outstanding martial roles as Darth Maul in STAR WARS and Edgar in HEROES. The ninjas are conveniently color coded: black is good, white is evil and red is just like the red security shirts in STAR TREK, except they are katana-fodder instead of phaser-fodder (there is an exception to this rule which I’ll discuss in paragraph after the next one). Park and Lee add some martial authenticity, but given the frenetic pace and quick-cut editing, their virtuosity isn’t fully showcased. Despite my personal affection for 3D cinema, it tends to make high-velocity fight scenes skitter, so they become hard to watch. This issue is exacerbated by choppy editing, but there are enough explosions to cover for it.

Joining the cast is The Roc…I mean Dwayne Johnson, the most prominent non-Expendable action star around now. Johnson explodes as Roadblock, the new lead Joe. It’s a role he was born to play. After some quick buddy banter with Duke, Roadblock quickly assumes command. Given The Roc… I mean Dwayne Johnson’s background in professional wrestling, he can really sell a fight scene. And that body of his looks like it come right out of a comic book.

Also joining the cast is Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, Elodie Yung, and the RZA. Willis is Joe, which works to some degree (for accuracy he really needs that cheek scar). But like that original doll, he does have more than one rifle. In fact, he has a whole arsenal of top-shelf firearms at his disposal. This is a film with a lot of gunplay, almost as much as a videogame. Palicki and Yung are the new femme fatales, playing the ninjette Jinx and the soldier’s daughter Jaye. Jinx is that rare breed of femme fatale red ninja like ELEKTRA, sexy and lethal. They override the red-ninja-katana-fodder rule. Both ladies add just the right amount of sexiness to rest your eyes between all of the explosions. And RZA is pitch perfect as the Joe’s version of a black blind Master Po. He has the longest speech, which isn’t saying much. But it works well as he’s the best speaker – or rapper as the case may be. It’s a Kung Fu film redemption for him after his personal project, THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, failed to deliver at the box office.

G.I. Joe has a huge fanbase, so much so that it crosses into cosplay. Even at the screener, more than dozen fans showed up in costume and cheered on the film with hearty shouts of “GO JOE!” RETALIATION is being strategically released just prior to Easter weekend, the weekend of Wondercon, a major national convention of comics and related popular art forms, and a cosplayer extravaganza.

RETALIATION is one of a seasonal triptych of films that focus on evil forces taking over the White House, an emergency only solved by massive gunfire. RETALIATION’s premiere is neatly sandwiched between OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (another North Korea conquers America flick like RED DAWN that was released the week prior) and WHITE HOUSE DOWN (scheduled for summer release and starring Channing Tatum). This begs the question: Is the NRA writing these films? Given the exhibitionistic firearm fetish showcased in G.I. JOE, it’s a slightly disturbing underlying message. But as I said earlier, this isn’t a film to think about very hard.

At $300 million, RISE OF THE COBRA already claims the title as the biggest box office film to prominently feature ninjas. RETALIATION is one of those rare cases where the sequel outshines the initial installment. It’s a superior film on every level, except there’s no IRON MAN angle, which is just as well with the highly-anticipated release of IRON MAN 3 also coming this summer. The centerpiece of the film, teased in the trailer, is a 3D ninja battle while rappelling off a mountain cliff. It’s a spectacular scene, all CGI, which showcases how deep 3D has gone. For stalwart fans of 3D cinema, that scene alone is worth the price of admission. It’s 3D ninja mountain mayhem. What more could you want?

With this sequel, the G.I. JOE franchise looks to be in good shape for another sequel. There is a huge stable, as many as any major comic book franchise, so the amount of new characters and new actors that can be introduced is almost inexhaustible. I just hope that with the next installment, the ninja apprentice Tiger Claw makes the cut.

Up in G.I. Joe Valhalla, my old blown-up dolls are looking down and smiling.

Television director Adam Rottler knew just how gigantic the task in front was. Six-foot-three and 185 pounds, to be exact. Rottler, a whisper of a man at 5-5 and 135 pounds had the monumental — and scary — job of telling Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine what to do when the MMA superstar guest starred this fall on the underground web series Enter the Dojo.

And if his directions to one of the fiercest men ever in the octagon didn’t go over so well? “I think I might’ve been able to outrun him,” Rottler says of his exit strategy.

The director discovered he didn’t need to. “I expected someone who spent their entire career kicking ass to be less friendly,” he says. “It’s totally not fair in hindsight. [Jardine] made it really easy, he was really accommodating with anything we had to say. He was really excited to be there and, as it turns, out, a good actor, too.”

Jardine is the latest MMA luminary to appear on Enter The Dojo – a YouTube-based comedy series that is to American martial arts schools what NBC’s The Office was to workplaces everywhere: a show with punchlines as funny as they were true. In five to 12-minute, mockumentary-style episodes, Enter The Dojo chronicles the uproarious teachings of Master Ken and his motely crew of students as they study Ameridote, the only martial art form that, according to Master Ken, isn’t “bull—-.” Even top-rated MMA trainer Greg Jackson and fighter Julie Kedzie appeared on the show, and learned that everything they knew about MMA was, according to Master Ken, “bull—-.”

The show posts its special holiday episode Dec. 18 and has attracted more than two million views online and lists nearly 14,000 subscribers — many of them professional fighters themselves. After a wrestling session at Jackson/Winkeljohn’s gym last week, professional fighters like John Dodson, Isaac Vallie-Flagg, Kedzie and Michelle Waterson started talking about their favorite TV shows. Enter the Dojo earned an honorable mention.

“Everybody here loves the show,” says Vallie-Flagg.

Kedzie learned about the series after she walked into Jackson’s office and found him cracking up as he watched the show. “I watched the entire series, like, in an hour,” she says. “It was just the funniest, funniest thing I’d ever seen.”

The web series is the brainchild of television writer and Okinawa kempo black belt, Matt Page, who plays Master Ken. When Page left his hometown in Maine years ago, he also left behind his home dojo, a traditional Japanese school. As he bounced around Southern California and New Mexico he discovered franchised dojos — aka McDojos. “They were really wacky,” he says. “They had crazy techniques, crazy instructors, crazy uniforms. I didn’t know that schools like that existed. I also experienced some instructors that said and did things that I put directly into the show. Things that are not made up. Things that you wouldn’t think would happen at a real martial arts school but they happened to me.” Take, for example, the second episode of the series, “Destroy the Groin,” in which Master Ken mandates groin-only sparring. That happened to Page in real life. “And he paired me with a woman.” Paige translated the experience onto the screen. “I thought maybe other people would find this funny.”

Others have not only found it funny, but true.

“I’ve been to places like that,” says Kedzie.

The episode called “Kill Face” in which Master Ken teaches his students to make a disturbing facial expression — a hallmark of Ameridote — also stemmed from Page’s real-life experiences. And if you ask Kedzie, her very own expressions. When she watched the character, Rachel, an ardent Ameridote disciple, stick out her chin to make her kill face, Kedzie couldn’t help but laugh. “I was like wait a second, I think she doing of a mockery of how I am.”

But not everyone is in on the joke. Scrolling through the YouTube comments reveals that some viewers, confused by the mockumentary format, think Master Ken is real. Others in the “Ninja community”, as Page calls them, have threatened the show’s creators for mocking them.

The show has also had its real-life, not-so-funny missteps. In the middle of Season 1, Master Ken conducts a women’s self-defense class that, depending on the viewers’ sensibility, ranges from coarse to downright offensive. “We pushed our luck,” says Page. “We thought it was funnier than it was.” Page is regretful but not exactly apologetic. “If you’re going to do comedy, you’ve got to push the envelope a bit.”

The show’s producer, Alicia J. Keyes, says the show has matured. “Matt’s learned a tremendous amount.”

That learning curve is about to dramatically slope upward. Page has been shopping the show to network executives in Los Angeles, trying to find it a traditional television home. He’s also exploring transferring the web characters to the big screen in a feature film. “We’re pumping the breaks a bit,” says Rottler of the prospect of a third season. But to the many shows fans — and fighters—not having another batch of Enter The Dojo episodes would be, in the words of Master Ken, bull—-

He has has starred alongside Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, John Claude Van Damme, Brandon Lee, and Kurt Russel, and he has been killed by, will, almost all of them. He practices Sil Lum Kuen, Northern Shaolin kung fu, and was a former Beverly Hills Pro/Am Karate Soft Forms Champion.

It is not only Al’s impressive martial arts skills that attracts attention, but his Fu Manchu mustache, his long wavy hair, and that lean muscular physique, along with his incredible agility, that has made him a very memorable actor.

Al is best known for his role as Endo, the Henchman, in Lethal Weapon, where he enjoys torturing Mel Gibson with electric shock. He plays Uli, the candy bar stealing terrorist, in Die Hard. In Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure he plays Genghis Khan, the Mongol barbarian, and he believes this is his only film role where he wasn’t killed. Al’s favorite film role is Mihn, the Henchman, who fights the late Brandon Lee in Rapid Fire because they allowed him to actually fight before dying. He also played Wing Kong Hatchet Man, the Screaming gangster, in Big Trouble in Little China.

He had a recurring role on the first season of the TV series 24. He also has made appearances on several television shows such as Knight Rider, Magnum, P.I., The Twilight Zone, T. J. Hooker, MacGyver, That ’70s Show, and HBO’s Deadwood.

In addition to being an action star in films and TV, Al has also worked as a stuntman, stunt and fight coordinator, writer producer, and director. Famous as a stuntman, Leong was involved with the production of many films including The Golden Child, Last Action Hero, Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla, Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, and Daredevil.

In 2000, Al Leong wrote, directed and acted in his low-budget action film, Daddy Tell Me A Story…. which was filmed in Canada. The film included actors Rob Shields, Ho Chow, Stephen Coombes, Samantha Cook, Al Leong, Christopher Lee Clements, and Michael Chan.

In 2003, Al starred in Dave Callaham’s “Writer Reel”. This was a five-minute short film where Leong portrayed Callaham going through a typical day in the life of a writer. The ‘reel’ was accepted into a number of short film festivals.

Al has also written a book about his life. The book is called The Eight Lives of Al “Ka-Bong” Leong and within its pages, Al “generously shares private photos, along with “behind the scenes” stories, and personal anecdotes of his many lives. He talks candidly about his journey to the big screen, his private life, his battle with brain cancer, and his recent stroke. For those of you who always wanted to know more…finally, here’s the untold story of Al “Ka-Bong” Leong in his own words.”

Patrick Chan say, “This biography of Al Leong pulls no punches. He’s brutally honest and bears his soul from his family life to health issues to his martial arts background to his professional career. If you are a fan of Al, martial arts, or are thinking about working in the film business – read this book! There are some great personal and Hollywood photos in the book.”

The Master says “A powerful and inspiring biography. This man lived it all, martial arts master, multiple martial arts tournament champion, stunt man, terse and intense action film actor, fight scene coordinator for shows like Kung Fu The Legend Continues, and many well known martial arts films, film maker, director, cancer survivor… all in a no holds bar way that was fearless, multifaceted, and fascinating. A great read,of a man who did it all the hard way, and won. Al did it all from ground zero, with a determination that he could. Al Leong’s life story teaches us a great life lesson: you are, that which you seek. A must read.”

Al Leong is a martial arts master and tournament champion, a terse and intense action film actor and directory, a stunt man and fight scene coordinator and an author, but most of all he is the real, in and out of the film industry. Kudos, Al Leong!
